This is a really simple idea that actually comes from one of the pubs I used to work at. They did three choices of filling, but the possibilities are endless. Great for a simple meal when a classic sandwich just doesn’t fill you with excitement.

Firstly, preheat the grill to a fairly high heat. Take a small baton loaf and slice it in half vertically, ready to fill. Grill your gammon steak and once cooked, slice into strips. Place the strips into the roll and add grated cheese – don’t be too shy with it; use half fat cheese if you prefer. Sprinkle a little freshly ground black pepper over the top and place under the grill to melt the cheese. Serve with some fresh salad, crisps, or chips for a more substantial meal.
Told you it was simple! Other fillings that work really well are Cajun chicken, pork, or even rump steak, particularly if you used a cheese like Mexicana which has small pieces of chilli flavouring it, or did away with the cheese altogether and used some fried or roasted red onion. One I’m going to try next time is sliced lamb steaks with Cambozola or a similar blue brie.
Give it a go and let me know what fillings you use 🙂
